THE DRAGON & THE SPOON

Silla Quenn: The Silence That Echoed Back a Dragon

Silla Quenn

The story so far

For two hundred years the village and the dragon had an arrangement, and it suited everybody. Every midsummer the people climbed the hill to the banquet hall and fed Ashfang a feast, with him at the head of the table, first cut of everything, toasted with the good cutlery. It was cheaper than being eaten and, most years, a lovely evening. In return he left the fields alone and saw off wolves when asked nicely.

Then the roof fell in, forty winters ago, and nobody fixed it. The village argued about who should pay, then got tired of arguing, then quietly stopped climbing the hill altogether. The hall filled with rain and nettles. Ashfang waited. A year, then ten, then a few more, with the patience of something that counts in centuries and the grievance of something that has counted every missed dinner. This spring he sent word, singed into the miller’s door: forty feasts owed, due at dusk on midsummer, payable in the only coin a village has, which is fire.

The village did try. It sent a goat, which he ate and declared no substitute for a feast. It sent a petition, which came back with the spelling corrected. It sent the mayor’s nephew, who is fine, and came back down the hill very fast. All that is left of the old feast service is a single steel spoon, dug out of the rubble under the fallen roof, and they have sent it up the hill with you, because a spoon is what they have and you are who they have.

Ashfang knows all of this. He has been in the hall since noon, coiled where the head of the table used to be, and it has started to rain on him.

1 / 7

I tap the spoon once against the stone and listen to how long the hall holds the note. I ask him to be quiet.

You tap the spoon lightly against a stone, waiting for the reverberation like a conductor tuning an orchestra. The note lingers longer than you'd expect for ruins, a curious acoustic anomaly. Ashfang's scaly head tilts, nostrils flaring. "Silence? A feast without sound? How droll," he sneers. Yet, he lowers his massive wing, curiosity piqued, granting this odd human's hush more weight than a spoon. Your weird note floats between raindrops and dragon breath, buying you a moment. What now?

2 / 7

I walk the hall tapping as I go, listening for where the sound goes dead and where it rings on far too long.

With your trusty spoon tapping away like a deranged metronome, you track the sound’s rebellion. It dies abruptly near a collapsed wall strewn with shattered pottery—a dessert never served. But to the east, echoes bloom long and wild, as if the ruins kept a secret symphony. Ashfang watches, puzzled, snorting smoke crescendos. "Your spoon dabbles in mysteries I barely tolerate." Rain splatters sharper, the village’s panic brewing beyond. What new tune do you tap out?

3 / 7

I ask Ashfang which span he has been sleeping under all these years, and I tap the stone directly above him.

In the deluge’s drumming company, you ask Ashfang which span of the broken roof has been his bed for years. The dragon’s nostrils flare; his eyes sharpen, reflecting rain-soaked regret or something like it. You tap the stone above him—a dull, hollow clang, far from the vibrant echoes eastward. "That rusty slab?" Ashfang scoffs, "The worst nap spot in a century." His tail flicks the debris, sending shards clattering. "But nostalgia holds many rodents." The village beyond shudders under distant screams. What strange brunch do you cook up next?

4 / 7

I strike the same spot in rhythm, over and over, until the dust starts coming down in threads and he stops talking.

You hammer the rusty slab above Ashfang in a maddening rhythm, a spoon-powered drumbeat driving dust like spectral confetti into the damp air. The dragon's tail twitches in confused irritation as flaky plaster flurries coat his scales. His blustering halts, replaced by a watchful stillness. "Enough with your percussion, drummer of despair," he growls, eyes narrowing. The dust settles like a thin veil, and for a moment, you hold the tempo of his attention. Village screams tick louder; dusk pulls taut. What's your next move?

5 / 7

I stop, and I let the silence sit. Then I ask him what he thinks I could do here with an evening and a spoon.

The silence thickens like unbuttered toast. Ashfang's eyes gleam with scorn—or is it amusement? "An evening and a spoon? With such glacial resources, I might attempt crafting a modest dent in my ego," he sneers. "I, a titan of flame and fury, negotiating with a condiment connoisseur? Delightful farce." A faint curl of smoke drifts from his nostrils, the village’s fate inches closer to ash. Your spoon lies smug and waiting in your palm. What appetizer of audacity serves you next?

6 / 7

I offer terms: I put the spoon down and the roof stays up, and he takes his oath somewhere with better acoustics.

You clatter the spoon down with solemn ceremony, a peace token forged in the heat of absurdity. Ashfang's smoky laugh rolls like thunder over dripping stone. "The roof stays? A fine roof? And I utter my vow in a concert hall, not a cavern of ruins? Now, this is entertainment worthy of a godling’s attention." He coils thoughtfully, mist curling around his spines. The ruins might yet host an accord, if your spoon’s humble thud can shape a promise. Village flames flicker at dusk’s edge. What final flourish will you deliver?

7 / 7

I tap once more, softly, and hold the spoon out to him, so he can hear exactly what the hall thinks of his answer.

Your soft tap sends a clear, ringing note that fills the hall, a flawless echo of the fragile promise made. Ashfang, spoon angled and ears—scale-tips?—attuned, inhales sharply. "A vow echoed in stone and steel," he muses, tail curling contemplatively. The dragon bends low, meeting your extended spoon with a claw delicate as a soufflé’s rise. "A bargain sealed without fire or fury. A senseless snack, indeed, but one with a tasteful crunch." The village breathes beneath a sky unburned, as dusk folds around an unlikely peace—and the quiet triumph of a spoon.

THE COUNCIL

“A feast without sound? How droll.”

Epic.

The Silence That Echoed Back a Dragon

Silla investigates the acoustic oddities using only a spoon, extracts character from Ashfang, and reframes the bargain as a ritual performed with the spoon. The peaceful pact, sealed by echo and spoon, is causally sound and genuinely inventive. Silla lets Ashfang answer the offer with the spoon—timing, performance and object all essential; the village is saved. Highly original, nicely absurd.

“When a dragon threatened her village, Silla Quenn turned acoustics to negotiation. Her bell-trained ear and a simple spoon reshaped both a dragon’s oath and her home’s fate.”
